The 14th annual CableLabs® Winter Conference took place February 10-12, 2003, in Broomfield, Colorado, gaining about a 30% increase in attendance over winter conference 2002 to a total of about 530 people. It was CableLabs largest conference to date. The conference also featured 39 demonstrations of new technologies and of implementations of work done by CableLabs projects. Industry technology analyst, Leslie Ellis, began the conference with an interview with Insight Communications Presidentand COO Kim Kelly about the current state of the cable industry. A political update session followed, moderated by Dan Brenner, Senior Vice President, Law & Regulatory Policy for the NCTA. Panelists were Frank Lloyd, Partner, at Mintz Levin Cohn Ferris Glovsky & Popeo; Steven Teplitz, Vice President and Associate General Counsel, of AOL Time Warner; and Joe Waz, Vice President, External Affairs and Public Policy Counsel, of Comcast Corporation. The morning concluded with another one-on-one interview session, during which Mark Greenberg, Senior Vice President, Portfolio Manager from Inveso talked with Tom Rutledge, President of Cablevision Systems Corp. about the past, present, and future of cable.

JD Burke, System Integration Engineer, OCAP™ End-to-End, CableLabs, led a panel called OCAP™ End-to-End: Is Your End Cover? with speakers Mike Hayashi, Senior Vice President Advanced Engineering & Subscriber Technology, Time Warner Cable; Kevin Leddy, Senior Vice President Strategy and Development, Time Warner Cable; and Tim Wahlers, President & CEO, Videom Corp. Jorge Salinger, VP, Ventures, YAS Broadband Ventures, LLC moderated a session entitled Truth Can Be Stranger than Fiction: Deploying IP Services that included participants John Coppola, Manager: DOCSIS™ Technology, Cox Communications, Inc.; Ken Gould, Director Consumer Technology Development, Advanced Engineering Group, Time Warner Cable, and John Treece, Director, Broadband Network Technologies, Comcast Cable Communications. The mid-afternoon panels included presentations about Digital Rights Management: Not Just a Good Idea…It's the Law led by Jud Cary, Assistant General Counsel, CableLabs. Sandra Aistars, Counsel on Intellectual Property, AOL Time Warner; Paul Glist, Partner, Cole, Raywid & Braverman; and Bruce Turnbull, Partner, Trade Practices & Regulatory Law, Weil, Goshal & Manges, also participated on the panel. At the same time, JP Singh, Director, E-Commerce, CableLabs, moderated a session called Go2Retail Using Go2Broadband(SM) that featured Steve Asbell, Manager, Retail Business Development, Cox Communications, Inc.; Jim Doolittle, Director Sales Channel Development, Time Warner Cable; and Chris Caffrey, Vice President, Retail Sales, Comcast Online.

The conference's first day concluded with panels about security and home networking. Oscar Marcia, Chief Security Architect, CableLabs, led a session called Cable Networks Under Siege: Securing Your Systems with speakers Bruce Kaalund, Director Network Security, Comcast IP Services; Israel Rosencrantz, Senior Member of the Technical Staff, AT&T; and Eric Rosenfeld, Security Architect, CableLabs. Doug Jones, Network Architect, YAS Broadband, LLC, moderated a concurrent session entitled Opportunities Exist: New Home Networking Services on Your Old DOCSIS™ Back Office which featured speakers Mark Francisco, Director Engineer Home Services, Comcast New Media Development; Mike Giobbi, Vice President New Technologies, Armstrong Cable Services; and Remi Rieger, Director Product Development, Time Warner Cable. Day two of the conference started with a general session about Wall Street and its views on the financial landscape for cable and the competition. Gary Lauder, Managing Partner of Lauder Partners, moderated the session that included Niraj Gupta, Managing Director, Salomon Smith Barney and Jessica Reif Cohen, Managing Director, Securities Research & Economics, Merrill Lynch.
