CableLabs® Winter Conference ’05 Sets Attendance Record with 11% Growth |

CableLabs®’ annual winter conference set its fourth consecutive attendance record, registering another double digit increase over the prior year. The 2005 event, held February 27 to March 2 in Westminster, Colorado, drew 700 attendees, compared with about 630 in 2004 when the event was held in Philadelphia. Since 2001, winter conference attendance has risen from 300 participants at a steady double digit percentage increase to 700 this year. In addition to plenaries, concurrent track sessions and roundtables, the event was accompanied by 60 companies that offered technology demonstrations. The next CableLabs conferences: Summer Conference 2005, August 13–17 at Keystone, Colorado, Resort and Conference Center; and Winter Conference 2006, February 26–March 1, The Broadmoor, Colorado Springs. The 2005 Winter Conference began February 28 with concurrent track sessions. One track started with “OCAP™—Update and What’s Next”, with moderator Frank Sandoval, Director, OCAP Specifications, CableLabs. Speakers: Steve Calzone, iTV Systems Engineer, Applications, Cox Communications; Jean-Pol Zundel, Chief Software Architect, Comcast; George Sarosi, Principal OpenCable Software Architect, Time Warner Cable; and Craig Smith-Peters, Manager, Advanced Technology and Standards, Cox Communications. The other track session was “M-CMTS Spec Development: Divide and Concur” with John Treece Sr. Director, Access Networks, Comcast as moderator. Speakers: Saifur Rahman, Sr. Manager, Advanced Engineering, Comcast; Doug Jones, Chief Architect, YAS Broadband Ventures; and John Coppola, Director - DOCSIS Technology and Engineering, Cox Communications. The next pair of sessions included “New Technologies for the Commercial Services Market”, moderated by Dr. Jerry Bennington, Executive Consultant to CableLabs. Speakers: Mark Wyman, Director of Technology and Operations, Commercial Services, Time Warner Cable; Joe Jensen, Executive Vice President - Chief Technical Officer, Buckeye Cable; and Dan Estes, Manager, Telephony Access & Transport Engineering Group, Cox Communications. Paired with that session was a panel entitled “Crowded Video Space: IPTV Is Coming,” moderated by Joe Weber, Director, Digital Video Platforms, Strategic Assessment, CableLabs. Speakers: John Hildebrand, Vice President of Multimedia Engineering, Cox Communications and Mike Deller, Engineering Manager - Broadband Facilities, Comporium Communications. The rest of the morning was occupied by general sessions. First was “Washington Insider” moderated by Dan Brenner, Senior Vice President, Law and Regulatory Policy, National Cable & Telecommunications Association. Speakers: Jim Casserly, Partner, Willkie, Farr & Gallagher; Steve Teplitz, Time Warner Cable; and Jeffrey Sinsheimer, Vice President, Law and Public Policy, California Cable & Telecommunications Association. The morning concluded with a general session “Analyzing the Business,” moderated by Gary Lauder, Managing Partner, Lauder Partners LLC. The concurrent session was “DSG Convergence of Data and Video,” moderated by Ralph Brown, CableLabs CTO. Speakers: Emery Weber, Principal Engineer, Advanced Video and Media Engineering, Comcast; Jorge Salinger, President, Consulting Division YAS Broadband Ventures, LLC; and Kenneth Gould, Director, Consumer Technology Development, Advanced Engineering Group, Time Warner Cable. Monday concluded with concurrent sessions. One was entitled “70% of Our Data is Used for WHAT?” and featured Dr. Terry Shaw, Director, Network Systems, Strategic Assessment, CableLabs as moderator. Speakers: Mark Ishikawa, CEO, Bay TSP; Justin Chapweske, Founder and CEO, Onion Networks; and Ron Bouganim, Vice President, Corporate Development, Trymedia Systems. Paired up with a session entitled “SIP is coming, Look Busy!” and was moderated by Ed Miller, Vice President of Advanced Network Systems, CableLabs. Speakers: Eric Rosenfeld, Director, PacketCable Architecture, CableLabs; Jason Gaedtke, Director of SIP and PCMM Architectures, Comcast National Communications Engineering; and Lorenz Glatz, SVP Network and Systems Design & Architecture, UGC Europe. Tuesday's sessions began with concurrent sessions also. One was “Cable To Go—Cable Integration with Wireless Networks” and was moderated by Glenn Russell, Director, Multimedia Applications, Advanced Network Systems, CableLabs. The other kick off session was “One-Way Consumer Electronics Deployment” and was moderated by Charlie Kennamer, Vice President Engineering, Standards & Industry Affairs, Comcast.
