CableLabs® Winter Conference Sets New Attendance Mark

CableLabs annual Winter Conference, held February 23–24 in Philadelphia, attracted a record number of registrants, showing an 18% increase to 629. There also was a record number of companies demonstrating new technologies in an exhibit hall that was part of the conference.

A highlight of the conference was a keynote address by CableLabs Board of Directors Chairman Brian L. Roberts, President and CEO of Comcast Corporation.

The conference started with concurrent track sessions. One session: "Putting Cable in Hot Spots," was moderated by Michelle Kuska, Director of Specifications and Architecture, Broadband Access, CableLabs. Speakers included: Mike Lee, Vice President, Product Management & Development, Rogers Cable Inc.; Aron Heintz, President, IPDR (Internet Protocol Detail Record) Organization; and John Barrett, Research Analyst, Parks Associates.

The other kick-off panel on February 23 was "XoIP: Delivering Multimedia Services with PacketCable," moderated by Jason Gaedtke, Director IP Technology, Comcast New Media Development. Speakers were: Susie Riley, Founder and CTO, Camiant; Brian Davis, Cable Systems Engineering, Cisco Systems; and John Coppola, Manager, DOCSIS® Technology, Cox Communications, Inc.

These sessions led into a general session "Beltway Insiders" moderated by Dan Brenner, Senior Vice President for Law and Regulatory Policy, National Cable and Telecommunications Association. Speakers for this session were: Steve Teplitz, Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Time Warner Inc.; Sandy Wilson, Vice President of Public Policy, Cox Enterprises, Inc.; and Kerry Knott, Vice President, Federal Government Affairs, Comcast Corporation.

A financial general session followed, "Wall Street's Take: How We Doin'?" moderated by Julian Brodsky, Vice Chairman, Comcast Corporation. Speakers were: Brian Deevy, Chairman & CEO, Daniels & Associates; Craig Moffett, Vice President and Senior Analyst, U.S. Cable and Satellite Broadcasting, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.; Bradley Vogt, Senior Vice President and Investment Research Analyst, Capital Research Company; and David Fassnacht, Senior Vice President, Partner and Portfolio Manager, Wellington Management.

Roberts delivered the keynote before lunch, focusing on the power of the cable broadband network and its potential for helping cable operators deliver new services in the future.

The afternoon resumed the concurrent track sessions. One session was "Retail - Is It Working for Cable?" and was moderated by CableLabs Vice President of Go2Broadband Jenifer Cistola. Speakers included: Kevin Hall, Rob Wharton, Senior Partner, Sand Cherry Associates; Seth Morrison, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Cable and Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM); and Steve Asbell, Manager, Retail Business Development, Cox Communications, Inc.

The other concurrent session after lunch was "Managing DOCSIS Networks - Take Control," and was moderated by Craig Chamberlain, Director, Certification, Broadband Access, CableLabs. Speakers were: Mike Giobbi, Vice President Engineering & Technology, Armstrong Holdings, Inc.; Joe Godas, Director External Networks, Cablevision Systems and Ben Bekele, Senior DOCSIS Engineer, Cox Communications, Inc.

The next pair of sessions included "Analyze This: Switched Video for Broadcast Programming," moderated by Joe Weber, Director of Digital Video Platforms for CableLabs Strategic Assessment Department. Speakers for this session were: Steve Watkins, Director, Digital Video Technologies, Cox Communications, Inc.; Remi Rieger, Director Product Strategy and Development, Time Warner Cable; and Weidong Mao, Executive Director, Video Architecture Advanced Engineering, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.

It was scheduled concurrent with "CableHome™ Revenue - Show Me the Money," moderated by Ralph Brown, Senior Vice President of Broadband Access at CableLabs. Speakers included: Mark Francisco, Director Engineering Home Services, Comcast New Media Development; Tim Dodd, Vice President of Technology Policy, Time Warner Cable; and Mark Bell, Product Development Manager, Cox Communications, Inc.

The afternoon concluded with paired sessions "IP Networking: The New MSO Infrastructure," moderated by Paul Bosco, Executive Consultant. Speakers were: Tom Staniec, Vice President, Affiliate Network Services, Time Warner Cable; John Leddy, VP Network and Transport Engineering, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.; Lorentz Glatz, Senior Vice President, Network and Systems Design & Architecture, UGC Europe, Inc.

The companion session was "TV, HSD, VoIP, Wireless: What Cool Convergence Applications are Emerging for the Quadruple Play?" moderated by Arthur Orduña, Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, Advance/Newhouse Communications. Speakers were: Jonathan Rosenberg, CTO, dynamicsoft; Franklyn Athias, Vice President, Data Network Engineering, Comcast New Media Development; and Gary Lauder, Managing Partner, Lauder Partners LLC.

February 24 began with track sessions as well. The first set of sessions included "Wireless Network Wishes and Wisdom," moderated by David Waks, President, System Dynamics, Inc. Speakers included: Tom McGovern, CEO, Appairent Technologies, Inc.; Nitin Shah, Group Head, Wireless Advisory Services RHK, Inc.; and Gary Weis, President and CEO, Cometa Networks.

The paired session was "Beyond Dumb Pipes: Network Brains and Intelligence for Data, Voice and Video," moderated by Richard Hertz, Vice President, Cross Platform Network Services, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc. Speakers included: Howard Pfeffer, Vice President, Broadband, Time Warner; Cable; Veenod Kurup, Executive Director, Data Operations Support Systems, Cox Communications, Inc.; and Michael O'Reirdan, Vice President, Application and Infrastructure Development, Comcast IP Services.

Another set of concurrent sessions followed, including "The All-Digital Transition - Why, When and How?" moderated by Ed Miller, Chief Network Architect, Strategic Assessment, CableLabs. Speakers were: John Hildebrand, Vice President, Multimedia Technology, Cox Communications, Inc.; Mike LaJoie, Time Warner Cable CTO; and Kip Compton, Vice President, Video/Media Architecture, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.

The accompanying session was "OCAP™ Application Developer Tool Kits," moderated by Frank Sandoval, Senior Software Architect, Advanced Platforms & Services, CableLabs. Speakers were: Jon Dakss, Vice President, GoldPocket Interactive; George Sarosi, Chief Software Architect, Time Warner Cable; and Rich Neill, Senior Vice President, Software Technology, Cablevision Systems Corporation.

A general session entitled "What the Marketers are Doing with Your Technology" followed, moderated by Char Beales, President and CEO, CTAM. Speakers for this general session were: Andy Addis, Senior Vice President, Marketing and New Products, Comcast Cable Communications; Brian Kelly, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Time Warner Cable; and Denise Myers, Corporate Product Manager, Cox Communications, Inc.

The morning concluded with a general session "Cable CEOs Build on the Present to Challenge the Future," moderated by Niraj Gupta, Managing Director, Cable and Satellite, Citigroup Smith Barney. Speakers included: Carl Vogel, President and CEO, Charter Communications; and Bill Schleyer, Chairman and CEO, Adelphia Communications Corporation.

The next set of concurrent sessions included one entitled "Distributed Denial of Service: Detection and Prevention at the Backbone," and was moderated by Oscar Marcia, Chief Security Architect, Strategic Assessment, CableLabs. Speakers were: Jeff Hartley, Manager Engineering Security and Abuse, Cox Communications, Inc.; and Jorge Nieves, Manager of Network Security Engineering, IP Services, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.

The other session in this early afternoon time slot was "Plug & Play, Then Innovate," moderated by Michael Davis, Project Director, Business Relations, Advanced Platforms and Services, CableLabs. Speakers included in this session were: Mike Hayashi, Senior Vice President, Subscriber Technologies and Advanced Engineering, Time Warner Cable; Michael Bloom, President, Communications Strategy and Planning, Inc.; and Lisa Pickelsimer, Director Video Product Development, Cox Communications, Inc.

The final two panels of the day included "The Hard Truth about Soft Switches, Part II," which was moderated by Eric Rosenfeld, Project Director, PacketCable™ Security, CableLabs. Speakers included: Wilfrid Aissi, Principal IP Telephony Engineer, Time Warner Broadband Network Services; Bill Dame, Director, Network Switch Engineering, Cox Communications Inc.; and Chris Kennedy, Director, New Technology Introduction, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.

The accompanying panel was entitled "VOD Today and Tomorrow" and was moderated by Time Warner's LaJoie. Speakers were: Michael Pasquinilli, Director, iTV Technologies, Cox Communications, Inc.; Becky Scilingo, Director New Products, Digital TV, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.; and Bob Clyne, Vice President, Corporate Technology, Cablevision Systems Corporation.

  • "The 3G CMTS-Revising Availability, Security, Peer to Peer and Policy Management" with David Fellows, Executive Vice President and CTO, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.; John Treece, Director, Engineering, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.; John Coppola, Manager, DOCSIS® Technology, Cox Communications, Inc.; and Mike Kelsen, Time Warner Cable.
  • "It's Not all Play: Legal Obligations Under Plug & Play" with Jud Cary, Assistant General Counsel, CableLabs; and Paul Glist, Partner, Cole, Raywid & Braverman, LLP.
