Louisville, Colorado, January 30, 2007—CableLabs® has hired former Comcast Cable Deputy General Counsel Lee W. Zieroth as Senior Vice President and General Counsel and has promoted Judson (Jud) D. Cary and Simon Krauss to new positions within the Legal Department.

Cary, formerly Deputy General Counsel, adds the title of Vice President of Video Technology Policy, and Krauss, formerly Senior Counsel at CableLabs, advances to Deputy General Counsel. Zieroth, a cable industry veteran, succeeds Dorothy G. Raymond who established the laboratory's Legal Department more than 15 years ago. Raymond will continue to advise CableLabs as a consulting attorney.

Zieroth has responsibility for all legal matters involving CableLabs, including direction of strategy and policy, antitrust compliance, intellectual property rights issues for CableLabs' specification efforts, protection of intellectual property, and general corporate and contractual matters. Zieroth also is a member of CableLabs' senior staff.

Prior to joining CableLabs, Zieroth was a Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Comcast Cable where he headed the Strategic Intellectual Property group within the cable company's legal department. He came to Comcast from AT&T Broadband where he was an Associate General Counsel and Lead Counsel for Technology and prior to that was Senior Counsel for Technology with Tele-Communications, Inc., where he provided legal support for numerous technology, intellectual property and venture capital matters for these cable companies.

Before joining the cable industry, he was a partner in the Denver law firm of Cohen, Brame & Smith for more than 12 years with a transactional practice focused on corporate, technology/intellectual property and venture capital law. He also worked as an electrical engineer for various research and development labs at Hewlett-Packard, both in Colorado and Palo Alto, California, and at the Stanford University Office of Technology Licensing. Zieroth is a graduate of Stanford University (J.D. and M.B.A.) and completed his engineering studies in computer architecture and digital signal processing at Colorado State University (B.S.E.E. and M.S.E.E.).

Cary, also an engineer earlier in his career, has as primary responsibilities support of the CableLabs OpenCable™ Project for the development of advanced digital cable devices (including PCs and the OCAP middleware platform), content protection and content distribution technologies, and the laws and regulations governing cable operators in these areas. He also provides general advice on cable industry technology strategy, licensing, standards setting, and defensive patent infringement coordination.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Cary worked as an engineer in the research and development labs of US WEST (now Qwest) in the knowledge-based systems group. His legal career includes work for the Silicon Valley-based law firm of Fenwick & West, U S WEST Communications (now Qwest) and MediaOne (now Comcast). He attended law school at Santa Clara University, cum laude, and also holds B.S. and M.E. degrees in engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

A Certified Information Systems Security Professional, Krauss is responsible for providing legal guidance to the CableLabs data projects, such as cable modem (DOCSIS®), VoIP, multimedia, and bandwidth management. He also provides legal counsel to CableLabs on employment law and tax issues and issues involving intellectual property, antitrust, security, privacy, and lawful surveillance.

Krauss received his law degree from the University of Denver where he also earned a Master of Arts in International Studies. He has worked extensively in private practice and as in-house counsel, providing technology companies a wide range of domestic and international legal services.
